With
his informative and interactive presentations on restorative techniques
and practice management topics, Robert R. Cowie, D.D.S.,
FAGD,
is in demand as a speaker at dental meetings and study groups throughout
the country. He has lead over 100 seminars in 27 states. No droning
lectures or endless slide shows for Dr. Cowie: he engages his audience
and encourages their participation through the use of wireless
interactive technology. The interactive component brings dental
learning into the new millennium. Handheld wireless keypads, very
similar in size to a TV remote, are provided to the participants
allowing questions that are asked during the presentation to be
answered individually and anonymously. The results are received
on a sensor connected to a laptop computer and immediately tabulated
and displayed to the audience.
This allows the participants to give truthful responses without
fear of exposing their answers and identifying themselves as not
knowing something. At the same
time participants can see where their knowledge level is compared to their
peers. Instead of the presenter intimidating or embarrassing someone
who may have fallen
behind in their level of care, the individual is motivated to learn more by
their own comparison of their knowledge, skill and judgment to
that of their peers.
This moves the lecturer away from the level of “look how good I am” to
a more effective level of “let’s see how good I can make each of
you in the audience”. The interactive capability will take dental seminars
to a new level. It will no longer be acceptable to strut and show your stuff.
Audiences can expect to learn, understand, and be motivated to provide better
care for their patients.
Dr. Cowie is known especially for his three-hour lecture on “A Simplified
Method for Full Mouth Rehabilitation.” He explains his unique procedure
that enables the dentist to fabricate –quickly and easily--a mockup in
the patient’s mouth of the work they’re suggesting for a patient.
In as little as 20 minutes of chair time, patients can have an actual acrylic
mock-up of their new look to try out in their mouths. More effective than computerized
cosmetic imaging, they can actually experience how their improved smile would
look and feel. Nine out of 10 patients who have this procedure commit to the
cosmetic and restorative treatments. Their spouses and significant others often
say, “I don’t care what it costs—just do it!”
